Frequently Asked Questions

In this section you will find the most common questions that beginners ask us.

  • What do I need to do to start learning how to drive a truck in Malta?

First and foremost the student must have the prerequisite Category B (Car) License obtained with a minimum of 1 year experience and be medically fit to qualify to start the Truck License (Category C).

Then, in order to be able to apply with any motoring school in Malta, you are required to apply for a student permit. A step-by-step Tutorial can be found below to help you fill an online form on Transport Malta's website.

To fill the online form, kindly go to the Transport Malta's website which can be found by clicking the link below.

Transport Malta will also support you with any problems or queries you may encounter by sending an email on dlsportal.tm@transport.gov.mt or by using the Transport Malta's Contact Us page located on their website.

In cases where further assistance is needed, TM will provide a personal appointment to assist further by calling on the dedicated telephones 2555 5427 or 2555 5428.

  • In order to change to another motoring school, a student must inform their previous motoring school that they would like to change to another motoring school, and then inform the new motoring school that they would like to switch to them. The new motoring school will charge a fee of €125 to do the office work required for the switch.

  • As per Transport Malta Circulatory/LTD/DVLU/004/24

This circulatory applies for all the Authorised Licensed Drivers which are legislated by subsidiary 65.18 - Rules regarding Motor Vehicles.

The Authority wishes to remind all Driving schools that during driving lessons and when attending practical tests, both driving instructors and students are expected to dress appropriately and presentably.

It is not permissible to wear short skirts/shorts, low necks, exposed 'midriffs', transparent fabrics or similarly inappropriate clothing. Sandals and flip-flops are also not allowed. It is important that personal hygiene is maintained at all times, especially when one considers the restricted space in the vehicle.

  • We believe that every student has their own abilities and therefore takes their own time to be fully ready. On average, a student takes 15 hours to be ready for the test however, that does not necessarily mean that it will be the same case for every student, and students are encouraged to understand this, because it is a completely normal thing. Not everybody is the same.

  • A mock test is like a simulation of the actual practical test. They are generally meant to help give students an idea of what the actual test will be like.

  • The practical test takes around 1 hour.

  • Lesson fees for start from €50 for 1 hour. Please note that fees will apply if a student does not cancel their appointment 6 hours before the lesson.

  • Upon receiving their student permit, a student will be permitted to learn how to drive for 3 years.

  • You will be required to pay €23.25 to Transport Malta for the student permit application and €150 to Pisani Motoring School for the student insurance cover.

The theory test fee for trucks is €30.25.

You can also opt for a translator to sit with you during the theory test for the following languages: Maltese, English, Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, Croatian, Hindi, Italian, Macedonian, Montenegrin, Punjabi, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish and Urdu. Maltese and English are free, for all other language translators you are required to pay €45.
